Accommodation

Housing

If accommodation is not provided with your job, you will need to arrange it yourself. We and your employer will provide some assistance, but at the end of the day, it is up to you!

For the first few nights at your U.S. arrival destination, you may need short-term accommodation before finding and settling in to your longer-term housing. You should make a reservation before you arrive at your final destination to ensure a bed or room upon arrival.

The most effective method of searching for accommodation is the internet. You should easily be able to find accommodation available in the place of your employment.

One way to do this is to use search engines. Visit www.yahoo.com or www.altavista.com. Enter the name of the city or town of your destination and you will be able to gather lots of information about housing and other useful subjects such as public transportation, companies, weather, point of interest.

Alternatively, you can use more specific sites for information. Visit www.HostelWorld.com for online hostel reservations, tours and activities, and other useful information. HostelWorld.com offers confirmed bookings for 3269 hostels in 136 countries around the world.

The Youth Hostel Association runs an on-line booking service, so you can pre-book your accommodation at cities throughout the U.S.

YMCAs and YWCAs also provide affordable temporary lodging. They have a "Guest Rooms for Traveler" section of their web site.

Many universities and colleges offer budget accommodation in their student housing. If there is a college or university in the area you are visiting, contact the student housing office on campus. It is recommended that you call and make reservations in advance, if possible.

There are many low-cost motel chains throughout the U.S. Motels are good for small groups, as you will usually pay for the room, not per person. Most rooms contain two large beds.

Food

You will need to budget around US $ 150 per month for food, depending on your needs.
