CIEE
Background
CIEE (Council on International Educational Exchange) is the leading US non-governmental educational organization. Their programmes allow participants to study, work, volunteer, teach and experience life abroad. CIEE was founded in 1947 with the goal of “increasing international understanding and establishing trust between nations”.
Among many activities, CIEE administers Work and Travel USA programmes for over 30,000 participants.
The US Department of State Exchange Visitor Programme
The Exchange Visitor Programme was established to increase mutual understanding between the people of the United States and people of other countries by means of educational and cultural exchanges.
As a sponsor, CIEE has been designated to facilitate exchange programme in four areas: summer work & travel; trainee (internships); secondary school students; and professional & research scholars. Each programme has its own rules and regulations, dictated by the United States Department of State in Title 22 of the Code of Federal Regulations Part 62.
Summer Work & Travel - CIEE’s Work and Travel USA programme, is a unique and exciting way for international students to experience the American way of life, while earning money to cover living expenses. The programme is designed so that overseas students can become more than tourists, experiencing life in the US firsthand by working alongside US citizens for up to four months, having up to a month to travel anywhere in the US.
Why CIEE?
CIEE’s mission is to help people gain understanding, acquire knowledge and develop skills for living in a globally interdependent and culturally diverse world. We approach our tasks aware of the great responsibility we are given to help mould tomorrow’s citizens in a complex and fast-changing world. CIEE continues to move forward with the same spirit and commitment that has already made us a worldwide leader in international education and exchange.
Work and Travel USA
Work & Travel USA makes it possible for international students to explore life in the United States with relative freedom and at minimum cost. Work & Travel USA permits overseas students who would not otherwise be able to visit the US to take temporary employment for up to four months during their term break in order to help covert their travel expenses. The programme operates in three seasons:
- summer (June – October)
- winter (November – March)
- Spring (March – August).
Since 1969, CIEE has been designated by the US State Department to administer this J-1 visa summer work & travel programme. For more information on CIEE, visit www.workandtravelusa.net
Participants in CIEE’s Work & Travel USA programme are allowed to work for a maximum of four months during their university’s summer vacation dates. Students can only participate in the Work & Travel USA programme during their term break and cannot miss classes to participate in the programme.
Partner Agencies
CIEE appoints agents in different countries to recruit participants for its various programmes. Way Out Creations Sdn Bhd is CIEE’s partner in Malaysia.
